Ruth Buchanan’s painting is underpinned by strong drawing, alongside her appreciation of form, light and movement. She has undertaken extensive drawing in both human and horse anatomy, and says she has spent a "lifetime learning to look". This, coupled with her study of landscape painting and her design-fostered illustration work of buildings and architecture, has brought acclaim for her paintings of horses in their environment, as well as the form of the animal itself. Ruth exhibits at major international shows as well as in galleries, and is described by John Fairley, author of The Horse In Art (1995), as:
“an artist of great fluency and finesse with an insider’s feel for the drama and detail of equestrian competition.”
Ruth was the featured artist in Equestrio Arabia (Dubai, March 2005).

Ruth started drawing horses as a child. The fascination remained with her throughout her careers in graphic design, as a college lecturer and riding instructor. It was inevitable, she says, that she would be true to her childhood obsession, and she became a full-time sporting and equestrian artist in 2001, adding hunting, hounds and dogs to her portfolio.

Although born in London and raised in Northamptonshire, family illness led to Ruth spending most of the holidays with relatives in the North. She returned ‘home’ to study for a degree in Leeds and stayed. A keen horse-woman herself, Ruth now lives and works in West Yorkshire.
